Unionized tax agents to strike nationwide in Cote d'Ivoire, July 21-23. Related demonstrations possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized public sector tax agents represented by the Federation of Trade Unions of the General Directorate of Taxes (FESY-DGI) plan to strike nationwide, July 21-23. FESY-DGI is demanding improved salaries, among other claims. The work stoppage will likely have an impact on government administrative offices. Businesses dealing with government tax authorities will likely experience delays due to the strike.

Although the FESY-DGI leadership has made no specific call for demonstrations, unionized tax workers could stage protests during the strike. Gatherings could occur outside government-operated facilities - such as the main tax authority and other related administrative offices - in major cities and towns, including Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Bouake, San Pedro, and Korhogo. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor any strike-related demonstrations that may materialize. Clashes are possible. Traffic disruptions are likely near large demonstrations.

Advice

Reconfirm all business appointments at government agencies. As a precaution, avoid all demonstrations and areas where security forces appear to be deploying. If crowds form, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location.
