Tanzania: Protests possible nationwide through late July over recent arrests of opposition leaders /update 1
Protests possible across Tanzania through late July over recent arrests of opposition leaders. Avoid all demonstrations.
Event
Demonstrations are possible across Tanzania through late July after Tundu Lissu, a politician affiliated with the opposition Party for Democracy and Progress (commonly known as Chadema), called for nationwide protests July 21. Lissu called for the demonstrations to pressure the government to release party leader Freeman Mbowe and 10 other Chadema members arrested July 21 in Mwanza. Related protests are likely in major urban centers, including in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, and Mtwara, as well as in Zanzibar's Stone Town and on Pemba Island.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security near government buildings, as well as other potential protest locations, over the coming days. Police are likely to forcibly disperse any related demonstrations that may materialize; law enforcement could preemptively arrest opposition candidates. Government supporters may hold counterdemonstrations; clashes between opposing groups of activists cannot be ruled out. Ground transport and business disruptions are likely near any potential protests.
Advice
Exercise increased personal vigilance over the coming days. Avoid all demonstrations due to the possibility of violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions and allow additional travel time near gatherings. Reconfirm all travel arrangements. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
