Afghanistan: German authorities call for its citizens to leave Afghanistan as of Aug. 12

German authorities call for its nationals to leave Afghanistan as of Aug. 12. Confirm transport arrangements in advance.

Warning

Event

German authorities have called for German nationals to leave the country using scheduled flights as of Aug. 12 due to deteriorating security conditions and the limited availability of consulate support. Officials have also advised citizens against traveling to Afghanistan. The notice follows similar calls by the embassies of other countries, including France, the UK, and the US.

Increased demand for flights and other transport is possible.

Context

The security situation in Afghanistan will likely continue to deteriorate in the coming weeks, as the Taliban continues to push government forces out of more areas amid the ongoing withdrawal of internal forces from the country. Taliban fighters have clashed with government forces in dozens of districts, especially in northern and western areas, and captured several border crossing points with Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Reports also indicate that the Taliban has gained control of at least 10 provincial capitals, including Kunduz. The US has also launched airstrikes on the Taliban, prompting the group's leaders to condemn such attacks as violations of a 2020 bilateral agreement with the US. Militant attacks in major cities have often targeted civilians and government officials; the Taliban claimed responsibility for an attack targeting the Afghan Minister of Defense’s residence in central Kabul Aug. 3.
