Australia: Officials enforcing stay-at-home orders in several areas of eastern central New South Wales as of Aug. 9

Stay-at-home order in effect for several local government areas in eastern central New South Wales, Australia, as of Aug. 9 due to COVID-19.

Warning

Event

Officials in New South Wales (NSW) have expanded stay-at-home orders in eastern central regions in the state as of Aug. 9 due to COVID-19 activity. Authorities added the Tamworth local government area (LGA) to the order through at least Aug. 16. Stay-at-home measures are already in effect for Armidale in Northern Tablelands Region until Aug. 15, as well as Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, and Singleton in the Hunter and Upper Hunter regions through at least Aug. 12. Under the stay-at-home orders, residents may only leave their homes to purchase essential goods, provide care, obtain medical assistance, or work in designated essential industries. Only one person can leave the household daily to buy essential goods. Officials limit gatherings to two people, though religious ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, can continue until 23:59 Aug. 11 in Tamworth. Individuals must stay inside their LGA or within 10 km (6 miles) of their residence unless working in specified industries. Individuals must have facemasks on their persons at all times and wear them in indoor public locations, on public transport, and at some outdoor venues, such as food markets.

Businesses must let employees work from home during the stay-at-home period; companies in nonessential sectors face fines of up to AUD 10,000 for corporations or AUD 2,000 for individual owners. Most retail stores must close, though essential businesses like banks and supermarkets can operate. Officials require businesses to limit occupancy to one person per 4 square meters (43 square feet). Food establishments may only offer carryout services. All entertainment venues are closed.

Most travel to and from LGAs under stay-at-home orders is prohibited, except for specifically defined reasons. Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel in order to enforce the measure and have advised residents to carry proper identification when traveling. Checkpoints are possible, especially on main roads in the affected area.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and cooperative if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. Stock up on essential supplies. Plan for business disruptions. Confirm appointments if operating in affected LGAs.
