Suspected Islamist militants attacked a military post in Sagme, Far North Region, Aug. 9, killing at least three soldiers. According to local sources, an unspecified number of soldiers were also injured in the attack. Security forces reportedly killed one of the attackers. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack, although it was likely carried out by Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants.

Security forces are likely to maintain a heightened security posture in the affected area in the near term. Further such attacks remain possible.

Context

Cameroon's Far North and North regions are vulnerable to cross-border attacks by Nigeria-based Islamist terrorist groups. Targets include Cameroonian security forces and communities in border regions. Two similar attacks, claimed by ISWAP, against military personnel occurred July 24-27 and killed at least 13 soldiers.
