China: Authorities imposing restrictions in parts of Henan Province as of Aug. 2 due to COVID-19 concerns

Restrictions implemented in parts of Henan Province, China, as of Aug. 2 due to COVID-19 activity. Transport disruptions occur.

Warning

Event

Authorities have introduced restrictions in parts of Henan Province after discovering community COVID-19 cases. As of Aug. 2, officials have designated one community in Zhengzhou's Erqi District a high-risk area. Three communities each in Zhengzhou's Erqi District and Shangqiu City are medium-risk areas. Residents of the designated locations and individuals with recent exposure to them must remain in their homes; exceptions may be possible for essential reasons. Authorities are implementing tight controls in nearby areas and will probably close most nonessential businesses and restrict travel to and from adjacent communities. Officials may also impose gathering and business restrictions in other areas of Zhengzhou and Shangqiu as a precaution.

While it is unclear how long the controls will remain in place, similar measures in other parts of China have typically lasted about two weeks. Areas of Zhengzhou and Shangqiu have begun COVID-19 testing for all residents; officials will likely carry out several rounds of testing in high- and medium-risk areas before easing restrictions. Officials could place additional communities under localized movement and gathering controls if more COVID-19 cases emerge.

Authorities are requiring passengers departing Zhengzhou's Xinzheng International Airport (CGO) to present negative COVID-19 tests taken within the previous 48 hours. Most provincial and municipal governments require individuals who have recently traveled to affected areas of Henan Province to undergo a mandatory institutional quarantine period. Generalized controls on long-distance travel from Zhengzhou and Shangqiu may be imposed in the coming days.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by travel controls. Confirm appointments. Remain cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers.
