Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants attacked civilians in the Idohu area of Irumu Territory, Ituri Province, Aug. 2. Militants also engaged Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) personnel during the assault. The fighting left at least 17 people dead.

Context

The incident highlights the persistent and elevated threat of militant violence in the eastern regions of the DRC. Multiple armed groups operate there, notably the ADF, an Islamist militant group with suspected links to Islamic State (IS). The ADF operates primarily in North Kivu and Ituri provinces and has been implicated in dozens of attacks and clashes with FARDC forces. Violence in the region has left hundreds of people dead in 2021.
