Egypt: Increased security likely in North Sinai Governorate through early August following clashes between security forces and militants
Increased security likely in North Sinai Governorate, Egypt, through early August following clashes between security forces and militants.
Event
Egyptian security forces will likely maintain a heightened security posture in North Sinai Governorate through at least Aug. 10 following recent clashes with militants. According to Egypt's Ministry of Defense, security forces killed 89 militants following a series of security operations in the governorate. Authorities have yet to identify the exact locations and time frames for the operations; however, they likely took place in late July and early August. The Egyptian army also stated that it destroyed over 400 bombs, four explosive belts, and 13 tunnels.
Additional security forces will likely remain deployed to the impacted areas and could establish roadblocks, resulting in significant localized ground travel disruptions. Additional violence between security forces and Islamic State (IS) militants remains possible in the coming days.
Context
IS poses a nationwide threat in Egypt, particularly in North Sinai Governorate. The militant group regularly clashes with security forces in North Sinai Governorate, where the government has been leading a low-level counterinsurgency campaign since 2011. Despite the campaign, IS's Wilayat Sinai branch remains one of the group's most active affiliates in North Africa and will likely remain a potent force for the foreseeable future. While the capabilities of IS affiliates have been degraded in North Sinai from their peak in previous years, IS fighters continue to launch weekly attacks targeting security forces, religious minorities, and civilians.
Advice
Postpone unnecessary travel to the impacted areas until the situation stabilizes due to the potential for further violence. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Carry proper identification and travel documents at all times. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers.
