France: Emergency crews continue responding to wildfires burning in Var Department as of the morning of Aug. 20 /update 2

Emergency crews responding to wildfires in Var Department, France, as of the morning of Aug. 20. Travel disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Event

Approximately 1,200 firefighters are fighting to contain wildfires in Var Department of southern France as of the morning of Aug. 20. Cooler weather and calmer winds led to a modest improvement in the situation as of Aug. 19, though authorities have warned that dry conditions will persist for several days and stronger winds are likely to enable the fires to spread through at least Aug. 22.

Around 8,100 hectares (20,000 acres) have so far been destroyed and more than 10,000 people, including holidaymakers at local campsites, have been forced to evacuate from the vicinity of Bormes-les-Mimosas, Cavalaire, La Garde-Freinet, Grimaud, and La Mole. As of Aug. 19, fires appeared to be spreading in the vicinities of Le Luc, Les Mayons, and Vidauban. At least two people have been killed and around 27 people, including five firefighters, have required medical treatment, mostly for smoke inhalation.

Officials have closed roads in the area to facilitate firefighting operations. Ground travel disruptions are likely, as are disruptions on available parallel routes. Flight restrictions are possible at local airports, including La Mole-Saint Tropez (LTT) and Le Luc (LFMC), to facilitate the use of firefighting aircraft. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment time for the fires; prevailing hot and dry conditions could hamper firefighting efforts. Authorities could expand mandatory evacuation orders depending on evolving wildfire conditions. Smoke from the fires could cause poor air quality across the region. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region. Localized power outages are possible.

Context

The blaze reportedly started on the Plaine des Maures nature reserve near Gonfaron, 50 km (30 miles) west of Saint-Tropez. Hot and dry conditions over recent weeks have made the area conducive to further outbreaks in the coming days.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Confirm public transport status and allow additional time for travel.

If operating in close proximity to the fire, collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
