Emergency crews responding to wildfire in the Var Department, France, as of the morning of Aug. 17. Evacuations ongoing.

Warning

Event

Emergency crews are responding to a wildfire burning near Gonfaron Village in the Var Department, France. As of the morning of Aug. 17, the fire was approximately 5,000 hectares (12,355 acres) in size. More than 700 personnel are on-site battling the blaze, which reportedly started the previous day and had prompted the evacuation of thousands of people. There have been no reports of casualties.

Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire; continued hot and dry conditions will likely hamper firefighting efforts. Emergency responders could implement road closures at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Authorities could also expand evacuation orders at short notice. Traffic disruptions are likely on available parallel routes; public transport delays, including train services, could also occur. Smoke from the fires may cause poor air quality in affected areas. Fires could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Confirm public transport status and allow additional time for travel.

If operating in close proximity to the fire, collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
