A surge in chikungunya cases was reported in Maharashtra State, India July-August. Avoid mosquito bites.

Informational

Event

Indian health officials have identified roughly 845 chikungunya cases in Maharashtra State July 13-Aug. 11. This compares to less than 20 cases reported in the state over a similar period in 2020. Most cases were reported in Nashik and Nagpur. This surge in cases is corresponding to the ongoing monsoon season. This is the most comprehensive data available as of Aug. 11.

Context

Chikungunya is endemic in India. While mosquito-borne illnesses occur year-round in India, transmission rates are generally highest during and immediately following the June to September monsoon season, when environmental conditions are ideal for mosquito breeding. During 2020, health officials reported a total of roughly 6,263 cases nationwide, with approximately 782 cases identified in Maharashtra State.

Chikungunya is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of chikungunya include fever, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and rash. Symptoms typically appear 3-7 days after being bitten but can develop up to 12 days after exposure. Most people recover within a week; however, joint pain can sometimes persist for months.

Advice

Avoid mosquito bites and remove standing water to reduce the number of biting mosquitoes. Seek medical attention if symptoms develop within two weeks of being in affected areas.
