India: Severe weather forecast through Aug. 24 in northeastern regions

Severe weather including heavy rainfall and strong winds forecast through at least Aug. 24 in parts of northeastern India.

Warning

Event

Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to affect portions of Sikkim and northern West Bengal states through at least Aug. 24. As of Aug. 20, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued orange weather alerts for heavy rain in the areas. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

The Fulahar and Ganga rivers in the Malda District, West Bengal, are in danger of flooding. Authorities have reported at least three deaths in the Ganga River.

Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. The National Highway 10, which connects Skiim State and West Bengal State, was impassable briefly due to a landslide caused by heavy rain. As of the evening of Aug. 20, officials have restored one-way traffic. Continued rain is hampering the clean-up. The Eastern Railway has canceled at least 13 local trains and diverted 16 long-distance trains in the Malda District. Additional traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways.

Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Landslides could block roads and railways. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Further disruptions to rail transport are possible where floodwaters inundate tracks. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports.

Advice

Confirm flights. Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential freight delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Charge battery-powered devices in case prolonged electricity outages occur.
