PT, Israel: Palestinian groups call for protests in Gaza, Aug. 21; security heightened along shared border

Palestinian groups call for protests in Gaza, Aug. 21. Additional Israeli security forces reportedly deployed to the shared border.

Warning

Event

Palestinian factions in Gaza, including Hamas, have called for protests, Aug. 21 to commemorate a 1969 act of arson at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, demand Israeli restrictions on Gaza are lifted, and further other demands. The precise location of the demonstrations is unclear; however, gatherings are possible in Gaza City or new the shared Gaza Israel border. Israeli security forces have reportedly bolstered security along the shared border in anticipation of unrest.

Should protests proceed near the border, confrontations between Israeli border security forces and protesters are likely. Any casualties or significant escalation could prompt a cycle of violence, including Palestinian rocket fire into southern Israel and Israeli military response. Incidents of violence and unrest could also be triggered elsewhere in response to developments in Gaza, including in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, or along the shared Israel Lebanon border. Disruptions to ground movement are likely near all protest areas and security force concentrations.

Advice

Avoid all protests and concentrations of security personnel. Liaise with trusted contacts and monitor developments closely. Consider deferring nonessential travel near the shared Israel Gaza border.
