Reunion: Activists to protest COVID-19 measures in Saint-Pierre, Aug. 21 /update 3

Activists to protest COVID-19 measures at Fairground Market in Saint-Pierre, Reunion, Aug. 21. Additional gatherings likely islandwide.

Warning

Event

Several civil society groups have called for protests Aug. 21. Participants will gather at 10:00 at the Fairground Market in Saint-Pierre. The action aims to denounce select measures imposed to combat the spread of COVID-19, particularly the Health Pass implemented by the French government. The pass allows holders to use certain facilities, such as bars or transportation services and is also mandatory for health care and select public employees.

Gatherings may take place elsewhere on the island, including in front of the Prefecture in Saint-Denis. Uncorroborated reports also suggest that activists will gather at 14:00 in front of the city halls of Saint-Benoit, Saint-Leu, Saint-Louis, and Saint-Paul. Protest locations may also include government offices, vaccination centers, pharmacies, and hospitals. Thousands of people may attend; up to 5,000 people attended related demonstrations in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre in previous weeks.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security to monitor the protest; localized transport disruptions are likely. Authorities could resort to riot-control measures, including tear gas and water cannon if activists do not comply with police orders. Further, police forces may disperse protesters if they are deemed breaching existing COVID-19 restrictions. Clashes were reported at a related gathering, July 31.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Monitor local media sources for up-to-date information on planned demonstrations. Check for transport disruptions and allow extra time for travel in affected locations.
