Samoa: Activists plan protest march in Apia, Aug. 2
Human Rights Protection Party plans protest march to Malae o Tiafau in Apia, Samoa, from 10:00 Aug. 2. Increased security likely.
Event
The Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) plans to hold a protest march in Apia, Aug. 2. Participants will gather at the Fiame Mataafa Faumuina Mulinuu II (FMFM II) building in Matagialalua at 10:00 before marching to Malae o Tiafau. HRPP supporters are denouncing the Court of Appeals’ (CA) statement July 23, declaring that the opposition Faith in the One God of Samoa (FAST) party is the new ruling party. Organizers have not announced a march route, though the protest will likely move along Mulinu'u Road. Participation in the protest will likely involve several dozen to a few hundred people.
Security personnel will likely monitor the protest march and disperse the protest if it is especially disruptive. Skirmishes between police and protesters are possible. Transport disruptions are likely on roadways on and near the march route.
Context
Samoa held a general election April 9 that resulted in a stalemate after the HRPP and the opposition FAST party won 25 seats each. The CA ruled in favor of the FAST political party July 23, ending months of political deadlock. Newly elected Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa and his cabinet took office July 27 after former Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi conceded.
Advice
Avoid the protest due to possible skirmishes. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area.
