Solomon Islands: Officials to enforce 36-hour lockdown in Honiara from 18:00 Aug. 29

Authorities order 36-hour lockdown in Honiara, Solomon Islands, Aug. 29-31. Plan for business closures and transport disruptions.

Critical

Event

Authorities in the Solomon Islands will enforce a 36-hour lockdown in Honiara to test the country's capacity to respond to a COVID-19 outbreak. The restrictions will be in effect 18:00 Aug. 29-06:00 Aug. 31 in an area from Poha to Alligator Creek, encompassing the capital city. Under the lockdown, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force will require that all residents remain in their homes, except those working in essential services and emergency response, including medical workers, police and health officers, and civil servants in relevant ministries. Residents must apply for exceptions, and police could fine people ignoring the order.

Significant commercial disruptions are likely throughout the lockdown period, as officials will close all businesses. People could crowd stores in the capital and surrounding areas to stock up on supplies ahead of the lockdown. Authorities also plan to block transport in and out of the affected area, and shipping delays are highly likely through Aug. 31.

Advice

Seek an exception to lockdown orders to conduct business-critical activities. Follow all official instructions. Remain nonconfrontational if stopped by police. Plan for queues and delays at available shopping centers. Reschedule business appointments. Consider adjusting itineraries for time-sensitive travel or prepare to shelter in place in Honiara until authorities lift lockdown orders.
