Suriname: Activists to protest in Paramaribo Aug. 16

Labor movements, business organizations, and other activist groups plan to protest at Independence Square (Onafhankelijkheidsplein) where the Presidential Palace is located, in Paramaribo, from 0900 Aug. 16. The action is to protest recent increases in the price of fuel, which took effect Aug. 13. The demonstration is likely to draw large crowds.
Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protest and enforce COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, which are limited to 10 people only. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if security forces attempt to disperse protesters who gather without permission or disobey authorities' orders to disband. Traffic disruptions are highly likely near the protest area Aug. 16.
