Warning

Event

Recovery efforts continue in North Carolina, especially in western parts of the state, Aug. 19, following the passage of Tropical Storm Fred. At least 35 people remain missing in Haywood county, and dozens of others have been rescued recently. The storm has also affected several roads, including Interstate 40.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency in response to the damage. More than 250 emergency personnel continue working in the area. More than 30,000 residences temporarily lost electric power Aug. 18, but reports indicate most had recovered power by early Aug. 19.

Business, transport, and utility disruptions are possible in the impacted area in the coming days as search and rescue operations continue. Lingering disruptions are likely in the coming weeks as clean-up and recovery operations occur.

Advice

Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in affected areas; some roads could be closed for several days. Plan accordingly for commercial, transport, and logistical disruptions in the impacted locations. Charge battery-powered devices in the case prolonged electricity outages occur. Heed instructions from the authorities.
