Yemen: Additional protests possible in Aden through late August

Further protests denouncing criminal impunity, declining living conditions possible in Aden, Yemen, through late August; disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Further protests denouncing perceived criminal impunity and declining living conditions are possible in Aden through late August following recent demonstrations. Protesters reportedly burned tires and blocked streets in the city's Al-Mualla District during the evening hours of Aug. 23-24, demanding the arrest of those responsible for a recent killing of a young man. Demonstrators have also staged similar protests in Aden over the past several days to express their frustration with declining living conditions.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence to sites of any additional protests. Localized transport disruptions are likely near related gatherings. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings as a precaution. Leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location if violence breaks out in the vicinity. Take alternative routes to circumvent areas affected by protest activity.
