Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) media has claimed responsibility for a series of explosions that took place Sept. 18-19 in Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province. The blasts, which targeted Taliban vehicles, killed at least three people and injured 20 others. However, unconfirmed reports indicate that as many as eight people, including Taliban fighters, may have been killed in the bombings.
Further attacks are possible. Taliban forces are likely to maintain increased security measures at key intersections and other sensitive sites in the city. Localized ground travel and business disruptions are likely in areas where security operations are ongoing.
Context
The terrorism threat is likely to remain elevated in Afghanistan over the near term. Various armed groups, including IS-K, are opposed to the Taliban and have the capacity to conduct attacks in both rural and urban settings. Nangarhar Province is historically a center of IS-K operations in Afghanistan.
