Afghanistan, Pakistan: Taliban reopens Afghan side of Torkham border crossing for returning citizens Sept. 14 /update 1

Taliban reportedly resumes passenger movement through Torkham border crossing in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, Sept. 14.

Warning

Event

Pakistani officials have confirmed that the Torkham border checkpoint with Afghanistan has reopened to passenger movements as of Sept. 14. The Taliban suspended pedestrian movement across the border Sept. 13 after Pakistani authorities prohibited entry for Afghan nationals gathered at the checkpoint. Pakistan continues to permit entry only for returning citizens, evacuees from Afghanistan with appropriate documentation, or Afghan nationals requiring medical attention. The closure did not affect cargo transport across the border.

Authorities will likely maintain heightened security measures along the border in the coming weeks. Intermittent passenger transport and cargo shipment disruptions remain possible and could occur without warning.

Torkham is around 69 km (43 miles) east-southeast of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and about 47 km (29 miles) west-northwest of Peshawar, Pakistan.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Reconfirm status at the border before traveling or routing shipments. Use alternative routes and shipping methods for time-sensitive cargo.
