A shooting attack and at least one explosion occurred in Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, on Sept. 22, leaving at least three people dead and two injured. Unidentified gunmen attacked a Taliban security checkpoint or vehicle, killing at least three people, near the city center. At least two people were also injured in an explosion. There have been no immediate claims of responsibility.

Ground travel and business disruptions are likely throughout Jalalabad as Taliban fighters investigate recent incidents and attempt to prevent additional attacks. Further shooting and bomb attacks are likely.

Context

Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) previously claimed responsibility for a series of bomb blasts in Jalalabad that killed at least three people and injured at least twenty more Sept. 18-19. IS-K will likely also claim responsibility for the Sept. 22 attacks. The terrorism threat is likely to remain elevated in Afghanistan over the near term, especially in and around Jalalabad. Nangarhar Province is historically a center of IS-K operations in Afghanistan.
