Grenade attacks in Bujumbura, Burundi, leave as least two people dead and several others injured Sept. 20. Increased security likely.
Event
Two grenade attacks have left at least two people dead and an unspecified number of others injured in Bujumbura during the evening of Sept. 20. One attack consisting of two detonations reportedly targeted a bus parking area near the city's old central market, with a second attack occurring about 1.6 km (1 mile) to the northeast near the Jabe Market in the Bwiza neighborhood. The motive for the attacks remains unclear; no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Heightened security is likely in the coming days as police investigate the incident. Additional attacks or clashes between assailants and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Grenade attacks are a fairly common occurrence in Bujumbura. Most attacks are politically motivated, with assailants tending to target security personnel, entertainment venues, and the residences of local nationals. This most recent incident in Bujumbura follows a similar attack on a bar in the nation's capital Gitega, which killed at least two persons and injured over 15 others during the evening of Sept. 19.
Advice
Exercise increased vigilance while operating in Bujumbura. If possible, avoid crowded areas, including bars, pubs, public squares, bus stations, military installations, and other sensitive areas with a substantial security presence.
