Burundi: Increased security presence likely though end of September in Bujumbura following security incidents /update 1

Event

Authorities are likely to maintain a heightened security posture through the end of September in Bujumbura following several grenade attacks targeting the city Sept 20. Authorities reported at least three explosions occurred on the Gatumba Kajaga parking area and Jabe market, killing at least two individuals; media reports suggest that up to five individuals were killed and 50 more injured. The motive for the attacks remains unclear. No group has claimed responsibility yet; however, officials have claimed that the attack had a terrorist motive.

The incident occurred just after the Red Tabara rebel group claimed responsibility for the attack targeting Melchior Ndadaye-Bujumbura International Airport (BJM) overnight Sept 18-19. Uncorroborated reports also indicate that grenade attacks targeting a bar in Gitega killed up to two people Sept. 19.

Heightened security is likely in the coming days as police investigate the incidents. Additional attacks or clashes between assailants and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Grenade attacks occur with some regularity in Bujumbura. Similar attacks have occurred elsewhere in Burundi, at various times in recent years. Attacks may be politically motivated; assailants tend to target security personnel, entertainment venues, and the residences of local nationals.

Exercise increased vigilance while operating in Bujumbura. If possible, avoid crowded areas, including bars, pubs, public squares, bus stations, military installations, and other sensitive areas with a substantial security presence.
