Red Tabara rebel group claims responsibility for attack on Bujumbura International Airport, Burundi Sept 18-19.

Informational

Event

The Red Tabara rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack targeting Melchior Ndadaye-Bujumbura International Airport (BJM) overnight Sept 18-19. Rebels allegedly shelled BJM while engaging military personnel for several hours. There have been no casualties reported. Reports suggest that additional troops have been deployed to secure the airport. The incident occurred a day before President Evariste Ndayishimiye’s scheduled departure to the US.

Officials will certainly maintain a heavy security presence at BJM over the coming days; ground delays are likely in the vicinity of the airport. It remains unclear whether mortars impacted the runways; lingering flight delays may occur.

Context

The Red Tabara rebel group is opposed to the central government. It first emerged in 2011 and is based in the neighboring DRC's South Kivu Province. It is one of the most active Burundian rebel groups and carries attacks on a regular basis.

Advice

Reconfirm flights if arriving at or transiting BJM as a precaution and make allowances for possible delays to reach the airport. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. If incoming artillery fire is reported in the general vicinity, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement.
