Papua New Guinea: Independence Day celebrations to take place nationwide Sept. 16
Papua New Guinea to celebrate Independence Day, Sept. 16. Official celebration planned in Port Moresby. Traffic disruptions possible.
Event
Papua New Guinea will celebrate Independence Day Sept. 16. The public holiday is celebrated widely in the country, and business and government closures are likely. Official events will take place in Port Moresby and provincial capitals; however, various other celebrations are likely in towns nationwide, possibly including parades and marches. Some festivities could draw large crowds. In the nation's capital, leaders and foreign dignitaries will gather at Independence Hill for a 05:30 flag-raising ceremony. A flag-lowering ceremony will take place at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium 15:00-17:00.
Authorities will increase security for events in major cities across the country. While violent demonstrations are unlikely, small protests are possible and could exacerbate traffic congestion in urban centers. Heightened security measures or rallies could lead to localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Unless attending events, consider avoiding celebrations as a precaution. Plan for localized transport disruptions; allow additional time to reach destinations near celebrations.
