Environmental activists affiliated with several organizations plan to hold protests in multiple locations throughout South Africa Sept. 23-24, as part of the Global Climate Strike. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand policies to combat climate change as well as other social and economic challenges.

Demonstrations are planned in the following cities:

  • Johannesburg: Wits Arts Museum Cafe, 12:00 Sept. 23

  • Cape Town: Parliament of South Africa, 11:00 Sept. 24

  • Qonce: Alexandra Road, Sept. 24 13:00

  • Vanderbijlpark: Town hall, 12:00 Sept. 24

Heightened security is likely in the vicinity of the demonstrations, especially those planned near government buildings, especially in Cape Town. Localized transport and business disruptions are also probable. Clashes are unlikely to occur.
