S. Africa: App-based ride-hailing service drivers to strike in Cape Town April 27-29

App-based ride-hailing service drivers to strike in Cape Town, South Africa, April 27-29. Transport disruptions possible.

Informational

App-based ride-hailing service drivers associated with the Western Cape E-Hailing Association (WCEA) plan to strike April 27-29 in Cape Town. While organizers have released no official statement concerning the purpose and scope of the work stoppage, the action will probably significantly reduce the availability of app-based ride services in the city. The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has implemented contingency plans at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to mitigate any potential impact the strike may have on travel to and from the airport. The ACSA is advising passengers to allow extra time for travel to the airport ahead of their flights.

While labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, striking drivers could stage protests as part of their walkout. Localized traffic disruptions and increased security are likely near any such gatherings that may materialize.

Consider alternative modes of transportation, especially if traveling to/from CPT. Allow extra time to reach destinations. Avoid any strike-related demonstrations that may materialize.
