Islamic State claim attack against a gas pipeline southeast of Damascus, Syria, Sept. 17 which resulted in power supply disruptions.
Event
The Islamic State (IS) has claimed an attack on a gas pipeline southeast of Damascus, Sept. 17, which caused power outages and electricity rationing in the city and surrounding suburbs. IS stated that it had attacked the line supplying the Tishrin and Deir Ali power stations. Syrian officials confirmed the attack, which occurred in the Harran al-Awamid area near Damascus International Airport (DAM). Officials stated that power supply was restored soon after the attack, but power rationing continued on Sept. 18.
Lingering power supply disruptions may occur in the coming days as officials repair damaged electricity supply infrastructure. IS maintains an operational presence in several areas of the country; further attacks targeting state infrastructure and military and civilian targets, in general, remain likely.
Advice
Develop or review business continuity plan (BCP) sections regarding utility outages. Identify business-critical functions that require a power supply. Invest in generators and, if applicable, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units. Power laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and other business or travel-critical appliances regularly. For safety reasons, monitor generators while they are operating due to potential fires. Unplug appliances and electronic equipment to protect against surge damage when power resumes. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
