Canada: Climate activists plan to demonstrate throughout Vancouver, British Columbia, Oct. 16-29

Activists plan to hold multiple protests throughout Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Oct. 16-29, to demand government action on climate change.

Climate activists affiliated with the Extinction Rebellion movement plan to demonstrate throughout Vancouver, British Columbia, Oct. 16-29 to demand authorities take action, including an end to fossil fuel subsidies, to combat climate change. The gatherings include a plan to halt operations at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Oct. 25.

Activists intend to hold a different protest every day as follow:

  • 12:00 Oct. 16: March from Nelson Park to the intersection of Burrard and West Georgia streets.

  • 12:00 Oct. 17: March from Grandview Park to Commercial Broadway.

  • 16:30 Oct. 18 and 19: March from Nelson Park to the intersection of Granville and West Georgia streets.

  • 16:30 Oct. 20: March from Nelson Park to Burrard Street Bridge.

  • 16:30 Oct. 21: March from Nelson Park to the intersection of Cambie and West Georgia streets.

  • 16:30 Oct. 22: March from Cooper's Park to Cambie Street Bridge.

  • 12:00 Oct. 23: March from Cooper's Park to Cambie Street Bridge.

  • 12:00 Oct. 24: March from Falaise Park to Grandview Highway.

  • 16:30 Oct. 25: March from Larry Berg Flight Path Park to Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

  • 16:30 Oct. 26 and 27: March from Jericho Beach Park to University of British Columbia.

  • 16:30 Oct. 28: March throughout downtown Vancouver, from Nelson Park to the intersection of Terminal Avenue and Quebec Street.

  • 16:30 Oct. 29: March through downtown Vancouver, from Nelson Park to the intersection of Main and Broadway streets.

Severe disruptions are likely around the protest venues and march routes, even if the demonstrations do not have significant participation. Activists said they plan to block roads and halt commercial activities near the protest areas and that they are willing to be detained by authorities before suspending their actions. Clashes with police are possible, especially on major roads and near the YVR.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination and seek alternative routes if operating near the impacted areas. Heed instructions from authorities. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock if you encounter one.
