US, Canada: Demonstrations scheduled in multiple locations May 1 to commemorate International Workers' Day

Activists to rally in various locations in US and Canada on May 1 to commemorate International Workers' Day; increased security likely.

Activists affiliated with multiple organizations plan to hold demonstrations in various locations in the US and Canada on May 1 to commemorate International Workers' Day (May Day). Unionized hotel workers are among those who plan to stage demonstrations to demand higher salaries and improved working conditions; other activists will likely express similar demands during the May 1 rallies.

Activists have announced that they will stage related demonstrations at the following locations and times, among others:

US

  • Boston, Massachusetts: Samuel Adams Statue near Faneuil Hall, 17:00

  • Honolulu, Hawaii: March from Fort Street Mall to State Capitol, 09:30

  • Miami, Florida: Stephen P. Clark Government Center, 15:30

  • Sacramento, California: State Capitol, 10:00

  • San Diego, Calif.: Bayfront Park, 16:00

  • San Francisco, Calif.: March from 415 Mission Street to Union Square, 14:00

  • San Jose, Calif.: Roosevelt Park, 16:00

  • Seattle, Washington: City Hall, 09:30; DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Westin Seattle, 16:00

  • Washington, DC: McPherson Square, 16:30

Canada

  • Mississauga, Ontario: Hampton Inn and Suites near Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), 16:00

Most demonstrations will likely have hundreds of activists in attendance. Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence to the sites of all large demonstrations. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in areas that are subject to protest activity and heightened security. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.
