Georgia: Opposition activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi from Oct. 10
Opposition activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi, Georgia, from Oct. 10; heightened security, localized disruptions likely; clashes possible.
Event
Supporters of ex-president Mikhail Saakashvili plan to demonstrate in central Tbilisi on Oct. 10 to demand his release from prison. Saakashvili was detained by authorities on Oct. 1, soon after returning to Georgia following eight years out of the country; Saakashvili was wanted for corruption charges which he claims are politically motivated. Participants in the demonstration will gather on Rustaveli Avenue from 17:00; attendance could reach the thousands. Further demonstrations calling for Saakashvili's release are likely in Tbilisi through at least Oct. 15.
Authorities will deploy an increased security presence to monitor all demonstrations. Large crowds and related security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the surrounding area. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, security services may resort to riot control measures, including tear gas and water cannon against unruly activists. Bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence but would face an indirect threat of harm.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in demonstration areas.
