Haiti: Embassy warns of possible violence Oct. 9-10 in Delmas 95 and 105, Port-au-Prince

Embassy warns of potential gang-related violence Oct. 9-10 in Delmas 95 and 105, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Avoid the area.

Warning

Event

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti issued an alert warning of possible violence in the Delmas 95 and Delmas 105 areas of Port-au-Prince Oct. 9-10. The advisory, which is dated Oct. 9, said the risk was connected to the recent arrest of a gang member but did not provide additional information. The warning follows recent violence and unrest in Delmas 95 after police arrested a prominent criminal gang leader based in the area Oct. 7.

Other diplomatic missions in Haiti have not issued similar advisories and local authorities have not yet commented on the warning. However, a heightened security presence is likely in Delmas 95 and Delmas 105, as well as other areas of Port-au-Prince impacted by recent violence and unrest. Localized exchanges of gunfire, as well as transport and business disruptions, could occur with little-to-no warning. Criminal activity and violent attacks could target both security forces and civilians.

Advice

Exercise heightened personal vigilance until the situation stabilizes. Avoid areas where police or other security forces appear to be deploying. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Update and review contingency plans. Plan accordingly for possible transport disruptions. Leave the area immediately if violence breaks out. Monitor local media for information regarding road closures.
