Further protests possible in Assam and West Bengal states, India, following rallies Oct. 18. Increased security likely; disruptions, clashes

Warning

Event

Additional protests are possible in Assam and West Bengal following rallies Oct. 18 denouncing ongoing violence in Bangladesh. Attacks targeting Hindus and vandalism of Hindu temples have broken out in the country since Oct. 13 over the alleged desecration of a Quran in Cumilla; at least five people have been killed and dozens of others injured. In Assam, multiple Hindu organizations held protests in the Barak Valley, comprising Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal organized protests in every district in the state, including Asansol, Jalpaiguri, and Kolkata. Police deployed to protest sites, and the gatherings in both states proceeded peacefully. While there were no notable gatherings Oct. 19, additional gatherings are possible in cities and towns at government buildings and public squares in the coming days. Additional protests will likely involve hundreds to a few thousand people.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if activists resist officials’ attempts to break up gatherings. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Business disruptions may occur if clashes break out.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests. Monitor local news sources for updates on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce gathering details in advance.
