India: Farmer coalition calls for nationwide protests Oct. 18

Farmer coalition plans protests blocking rail tracks across India from 10:00 Oct. 18. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of dozens of farmers' associations, has announced nationwide protests Oct. 18. Participants plan to protest on railway tracks from 10:00, blocking railways across the country. Participation will likely be especially high in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh states. Commuters in affected areas may seek alternative means of transport. Organizers may also hold protests at other locations, including government buildings, public squares, and on major roadways. The largest protests are probable in or near major cities and towns, where attendance may be between hundreds to a few thousand people. Participants intend to denounce violence committed against protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, Oct. 3, and demand that the government punishes Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra.

Rail disruptions are likely during the duration of the protests; rail services may suspend trains along some routes. Increased demand may result in shortages of available alternative transport. Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block nearby roadways, causing additional localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Confirm rail services during the protests. Plan for increased demand on alternative means of transport. Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in affected areas.
