Protesters blockade port of Genoa Voltri, Italy, Oct. 12; traffic disruptions likely, shipping disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Port workers and drivers blockaded the Port of Genoa Voltri Oct. 12 to denounce the introduction of the COVID-19 “Green Pass” and an increase in unpaid driving hours. Traffic disruptions are currently occurring on the A-10 motorway. Disruptions are likely to continue for several hours and residual traffic delays are likely through the end of Oct. 12 as freight traffic normalizes. The blockade could prompt short-term disruptions to shipping using the port.

While the protests are likely to remain peaceful, isolated scuffles are possible of police attempt to clear the roads forcefully. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted, they would face an indirect physical threat near any violence. Further related protests are possible in the coming weeks.

Advice

Check route status before driving near the port of Genoa Voltri and allow additional time for travel. Avoid all protests and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Anticipate short-term shipping disruptions if routing freight via the port of Genoa in the coming days.
