Protest and associated violence reported in Bamenda, Southwest Region, Cameroon, Nov. 12. Disruptions likely, further clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Protesters have reportedly marched towards the local governor's office in Bamenda, Southwest Region, early evening Nov. 12 during a demonstration over the death of a young girl allegedly accidentally killed by a police officer during a shooting incident. At least one person may have been killed and an unknown number of others injured in related skirmishes with security forces. Reports indicate at least one vehicle has been burned near the governor's office and that some roads in the city have been blocked.

Increased security, including potential movement restrictions, will likely prompt additional transport and business disruptions in affected areas of Bamenda over the coming hours. Further clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

The Nov. 12 shooting incident and associated unrest follow a similar event in mid-October when a police officer reportedly killed a girl on her way to school in Buea, resulting in the officer's killing by protesters and a demonstration in front of the governor's office.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow official directives.
