Unionized workers plan to strike across Martinique over working conditions Nov. 22. Protest also planned; fuel shortage possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized workers plan to strike islandwide Nov. 22 against COVID-19-related domestic restrictions as well as working and living conditions. Activists affiliated with numerous unions, including oil refinery workers, will join the strike. Participants also plan to rally outside union offices from 08:00.

Transport and business disruptions are likely through Nov. 22. Additional protests and roadblocks along major roads and outside government offices are possible; heightened security measures are likely at any protests that occur. Clashes are possible.

Fuel shortages are possible if the strike persists as refinery workers have joined the strike. A related strike took place Nov. 15; further strikes could occur in the coming days and weeks if workers' concerns are not addressed.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Confirm transport and business appointments. Avoid unnecessary travel. If you encounter a roadblock, do not attempt to cross it; seek alternative routes or wait for police to reopen the road.
