Protesters occurring in central Honiara, Solomon Islands, the afternoon of Nov. 24. Plan for increased security. Violent clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Protests are ongoing in central Honiara the afternoon of Nov. 24. A few hundred activists from Malaita Province gathered outside of Parliament House during the morning to demand the prime minister's resignation over various grievances. Clashes reportedly broke out as demonstrators attempted to enter the legislative grounds. Local reports indicate the crowd is marching toward the Chinese Embassy and have damaged several buildings nearby.

Increased security is likely to remain in place at Parliament House and around the Chinese Embassy. Additional fighting between protesters and security personnel is likely; police could use tear gas to disperse participants. Vandalism is also possible in areas where protesters march.

Advice

Consider sheltering in place if operating near Parliament House or the Chinatown area of Honiara. If working in other areas of the city, avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for violence. If crowds begin forming nearby, immediately depart the area. Monitor local media for updates, as protesters could march to additional locations at short notice. Plan for localized transport disruptions; use alternative routes to circumvent areas where demonstrations are occurring.
