Informational

Event

Zambia's state-owned power company, ZESCO, issued a statement on Nov. 8, indicating to prepare for power supply disruptions in parts of Lusaka from 06:00 Nov. 12 until 18:00 Nov. 14. The areas impacted by the measure include Matero, the University of Zambia (UNZA), Chelstone, Kalingalinga, Hellen Kaunda, Roma, Chamba Valley, Kabanana, Mandevu, and Ngombe. The company indicated that the outages are required to enable maintenance works.

Temporary commercial and communications disruptions, including cellular and mobile services, are possible. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible in areas experiencing outages due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an increased security threat during power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Advice

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled.
