Afghanistan: Power supply disruptions in several provinces, Dec. 29
Technical problem likely to cause power supply disruptions in 16 provinces, including Kabul, Afghanistan, Dec. 29.
Event
The Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat utility provider has indicated that a power outage is affecting at least 16 of the country's 34 provinces, including the capital, Kabul, Dec. 29. The outage was reportedly caused by a technical problem in Uzbekistan, from where Afghanistan imports much of its electricity. It is unclear exactly which regions are affected.
Disruptions to business and communications, including cellular and mobile services, may occur. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages. Locals may stage protests in the event of prolonged outages.
Advice
Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled. Avoid any protests as a precaution.
