Burundi: Increased security presence likely through end of December in Bujumbura following security incident
Heightened security likely in Bujumbura, Burundi, through end of December following grenade attack.
Event
Authorities are likely to maintain a heightened security posture through the end of December in Bujumbura following a grenade attack in the city center Dec. 22. The explosive device allegedly detonated in a cinema in the Bwiza neighborhood around 20:15, injuring at least 17 individuals. The motive for the attack is unclear; there has been no claim of responsibility as of yet.
Increased security and investigations may cause localized disruptions in the city. Additional grenade attacks or similar security incidents cannot be ruled out.
Context
Grenade attacks occur with some regularity. Attacks have occurred across Burundi, at various times in recent months, including in Bujumbura in late September. Attacks may be politically motivated; assailants tend to target security personnel, entertainment venues, and the residences of local nationals.
Advice
Exercise increased vigilance while operating in Bujumbura. If possible, avoid crowded areas, including bars, pubs, public squares, bus stations, military installations, and other sensitive areas with a substantial security presence.
