A magnitude-5.4 offshore earthquake occurred near Jayapura, Indonesia, at around 10:10 Dec. 5. The epicenter was about 71 km (44 miles) north-northwest of Jayapura. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 18 km (11 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt in northeastern Papua Province, Indonesia, and northwest Sanduan Province, Papua New Guinea. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
