Informational

Event

Unionized workers of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) plan to strike nationwide in Jordan Dec. 2. The action has been called in response to the organization's failure to pay salaries on time. Unionized workers have threatened to launch an open-ended strike if the payment of salaries continues to be delayed. While there have been no specific calls to protest, demonstrations could occur outside the UNRWA office in Amman.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor any possible protests. Heightened security measures, as well as localized transport disruptions, are likely. Should demonstrations occur, clashes between authorities and protesters may materialize, particularly if demonstrators refuse orders to disperse or are overly disruptive.

Advice

Operational delays and localized transport disruptions are possible near UNRWA sites across Jordan. Allow additional time for travel near potential gathering sites; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
