Event
The US Embassy in Kazakhstan has indicated that the opposition Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan has called for demonstrations Dec. 16 to demand the government's resignation and the release of political prisoners. The embassy has indicated that protests are possible near the Holodomor Monument on Republic Avenue in Nur-Sultan, near the Zheltoksan Victims Monument on Satpayev Street in Almaty, and at the Kasiret Memorial on Baydibek Bi Avenue in Shymkent. Demonstrations are also possible in other cities nationwide, particularly at prominent squares and city centers. Dozens to a few hundred people may participate in each event.
Authorities have suspended internet provisions in and around Republic Square in Almaty ahead of the demonstration. Officials have also deployed additional police personnel in the area. Similar disruptions and deployments will probably occur near other potential rallying points nationwide. Localized transport disruptions are likely. Clashes between protesters and the police are possible if demonstrators ignore orders to disperse. Mass arrests may also occur.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed the directives of local officials. Plan for ground travel delays near protest locations.
