France: Activists to protest in urban centers Jan. 22

Activists to protest in French urban centers Jan. 22; heightened security, localized disruptions likely; isolated clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Activists will gather in several urban centers across France Jan. 22 to oppose COVID-19 measures including mandatory vaccinations and health passes to access public venues. The largest demonstration will likely be in Paris, where activists will gather at Place de Barcelone from 14:00 before marching to Place Pierre Laroque. Additional confirmed actions include:

  • Bordeaux: Place de la Bourse, 14:00

  • Lille: Place Francois Mitterrand, 13:30; Place de la Republique, 14:00

  • Lyon: Place Bellecour, 14:00

  • Marseille: Vieux Port, 13:00

  • Nantes: Croisee des Trams, 14:00

  • Nice: Metro Garibaldi, 14:00

  • Rennes: Place de la Republique, 14:30

  • Strasbourg: Place Kleber, 13:30

  • Toulouse: Metro Jean Jaures, 14:00

Additional demonstrations are also planned in other towns and cities nationwide. Participation will vary by location but will reach into the thousands at larger gatherings.

Police will highly likely deploy to monitor protests. The protests themselves and associated security measures will likely lead to localized transport disruptions in affected areas. Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible, particularly if police attempt to disperse demonstrations. Clashes are also possible between protesters and frustrated commuters. Police may resort to riot control measures such as tear gas and water cannon against violent or non-compliant activists. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face an indirect threat of harm.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check traffic conditions and public transport schedules for disruptions before beginning journeys. Allow extra time for travel in affected areas and plan alternative routes if necessary.
