A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred in Nippes Department, Haiti, at around 08:16 EST Jan. 24. The epicenter was about 3 km (2 miles) south-southeast of Anse-a-Veau. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout much of Haiti, western Dominican Republic, and far eastern Cuba.
