Authorities in Mozambique ease domestic COVID-19 restrictions as of Jan. 20. International entry restrictions remain unchanged.
Event
Authorities have eased domestic COVID-19-related measures effective Jan. 20. Beaches have reopened, and businesses may stay open for their normal operating hours. International entry restrictions remain unchanged and are in place until further notice.
Domestic Measures
A curfew remains in place in Maputo, all provincial capitals, and municipal towns; it runs 00:00-04:00.
Beaches may reopen 05:00-16:00, though the sale of alcohol remains prohibited.
Businesses may resume their normal business hours, though restaurants, bars, and cafes must close at 21:00. Previous capacity limits of 20 percent inside and 20 percent outside likely remain in place.
Religious services and private gatherings will likely continue to be limited to a maximum capacity of 250 people outdoors and 100 indoors, without exceeding 50 percent of the maximum capacity.
Places such as cinemas, theatres, gyms, pools, or cultural centers, may operate at a higher capacity.
Stalls for the sale of food are allowed to operate 07:00-17:00 Monday-Saturday and will remain closed on Sundays and holidays.
The sale of alcohol is permitted 07:00-20:00, Monday to Saturday, and 07:00-17:00 on Sundays.
International Travel Restrictions
All international arrivals in Mozambique must present a negative result from a COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before departure for the country, irrespective of vaccination status. Children under five years old are exempt. PCR tests must be verified via the Trusted Travel Initiative, accessible here.
For travelers arriving in Mozambique via land border crossings, the negative test result remains valid for seven days, permitting multiple entries or short-term return travel.
Passengers who test positive upon or fail to provide a negative test result must self-quarantine for seven days. Those who provide a negative test result are exempt from quarantine.
All restrictions are subject to amendment at short notice in response to government reviews. Security forces are deployed to ensure compliance.
Advice
Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements and requirements before departing. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions.
