Additional protests and transport disruptions are possible at Torkham border crossing in Torkham, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following a protest Jan. 3. Local tribesmen blocked the Torkham Highway in nearby Landi Kotal to denounce government construction of a customs terminal on disputed land. Security personnel discharged firearms into the air and fired tear gas at protesters. At least two people were injured in clashes. Transport restrictions were reported at the border crossing. Tribesmen announced that they will continue the protests until the government suspends construction on the disputed land.
