Event

The Samoa Meteorological Service issued a tsunami advisory late Jan. 15 in response to a volcanic eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'pai in Tonga. Officials are advising that persons stay away from beaches. Officials have not ordered any evacuations. An earlier tsunami warning for American Samoa has since been canceled by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

Advice

Move away from the immediate coastline; the event can be long-duration, and the threat may persist for hours. Heed the directives of the local authorities.
